New Pro Tools FREE 5.01 Software for Mac and Windows Available Soon
September 29, 2000Digidesign today announced the release of Pro Tools FREE. The powerful audio recording, editing and mixing software used by more industry professionals than any other platform will be available as a free download or CD-ROM from Digidesign’s website www.digidesign.com. Pro Tools FREE for Mac OS and Windows 98, is a fully functional version of Pro Tools 5.0.1 LE with 8-channel audio support and 48 MIDI track capability, requiring no additional hardware. Pro Tools FREE is hardware independent, but offers standard Windows 98 Wave Drivers or Apple Macintosh Sound Manager support. Pro Tools FREE can be configured to use up to two channels of I/O on third party hardware, including many common PC soundcards and standard chip sets.
Digidesign Pro Tools FREE software is a great starting point for music, education, multimedia, film, video or radio production. First time users will be able to step into the non-linear, instant access recording, editing and mixing of Digidesign’s Pro Tools. Like professionals, newcomers to Pro Tools will be able to record and edit without erasing or changing original audio, edit during playback, create crossfades and mix with a common set of award winning features from Digidesign’s high-end systems. Pro Tools FREE includes the most powerful and flexible audio tools in the industry.
Pro Tools FREE will include the DigiRack RTAS Plug-Ins (EQ, Dynamics, DirectConnect, Mod Delay, and Dither) and support optional RTAS and AudioSuite Plug-Ins developed by Digidesign and Digidesign's many Development Partners. Pro Tools FREE unleashes virtually limitless processing options unrivalled by any other integrated audio and sequencing package. The Pro Tools Edit window includes comprehensive track overview, and an intuitive Mix window with all the
features of a pro studio console. Pro Tools FREE includes a fully functional 48-track MIDI environment with graphic MIDI editing and is able to import and export standard MIDI files.
Pro Tools FREE is an extremely portable solution for the audio professional, too. Session exchange between Pro Tools family hardware (Mac OS and Windows) and Pro Tools FREE can be transferred from studio, home or laptop. Pro Tools FREE will support most PowerBook and laptop systems: a truly on-the-go pro studio. Ideal for music, radio sound design and more, Pro Tools FREE can be used from the most remote locations. Now time consuming tasks like editing, compiling and mixing can be done on the road, in the air or even on the beach.

Pro Tools FREE 5.0.1 software will be a free download for anyone who has web access at www.digidesign.com/ptfree . Because some web connections can be slow or unreliable, Digidesign is also distributing the software on CD-ROM. A nominal charge (TBD) to cover Digidesign's shipping and handling expenses to distribute the software via a CD and mailer will be levied (Due to demand, a 4-6 week delivery is to be expected). The CD-ROM will include several RTAS and AudioSuite plug-in demos.
