SADiE Features DeCrackle Plug-In for its DAWs at 109th AES Convention

"Once Again the Collaboration of SADiE and CEDAR Demonstrates What is Possible from Noise Restoration Tools When Integrated into a Digital Audio Workstation"

September 23, 2000

SADiE, designer and manufacturer of SADiE digital audio workstations, is displaying the CEDAR DeCrackle plug-in for the SADiE 24o96, ARTEMIS, and RADiA workstations at the 109th AES Convention, held from September 22 to 25 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Booth 863. The plug-in will complement the very popular CEDAR DeNoise, DeClick and DeThump plug-ins for SADiE. All the CEDAR plug-ins utilize the full accuracy of the floating-point processing offered by the SADiE systems, ensuring the highest possible sound quality throughout the system.

"We are extremely pleased to feature the DeCrackle plug-in from CEDAR Audio," says Joe Bull, managing director of SADiE. "Once again, the collaboration of SADiE and CEDAR demonstrates what is possible from noise restoration tools when integrated into a digital audio workstation. CEDAR is renowned for providing the ultimate quality in restoration software and adheres closely to our beliefs that there can be no compromises when handling audio in the digital domain."

The DeCrackle plug-in is designed to remove a different type of audio degradation than conventional click removal processes. Crackle is frequently confused with clicks and ticks, which is not surprising given that it comprises many short-duration impulsive signal disturbances. However, a click detector will often find it difficult or impossible to detect the damage that leads to crackle, so a dedicated method must be used. CEDAR's DeCrackle algorithms are also effective at removing many forms of impulsive buzzes as well as some amplitude distortions. As with all CEDAR processes, these algorithms clearly differentiate between the problem and the genuine signal, allowing transparent restoration of severely damaged material. Undamaged signals pass without any changes. There is no distortion, no loss of transients and no loss of ambience.

"When we first started our partnership with CEDAR many years ago, I had the vision of a complete suite of CEDAR restoration tools married with the SADiE system," says Bull. "Combining a complete suite of audio restoration tools with a digital audio workstation provides the user with a very effective method of enhancing audio quality. An ideal system will be able to cope with impulsive disturbances such as thumps, scratches, clicks and crackle. This can be created using a combination of SADiE DeNoise, SADiE DeClick, SADiE DeThump and, now, the new SADiE DeCrackle."

"Everything about the CEDAR/SADiE collaborations has been a pleasure and a great success for us," says Gordon Reid, managing director of CEDAR. "First, we jointly developed DeNoise, squeezing the last ounce of power from the DSPs on the SADiE XS board. DeNoise quickly became established in the pro audio and broadcast industries, so it was a natural progression to develop Declick, which is, I believe, the best and most effective workstation-based declicker ever developed. DeThump followed soon after, and this is a unique CEDAR/SADiE process."

"With these three modules already in place," Reid adds, "and so firmly entrenched in our target markets, it was inevitable that CEDAR and SADiE should discuss the development of a decrackle process. So I am delighted to confirm that the two companies have agreed to proceed with this, and that a SADiE Decrackler [by CEDAR] will appear in the near future. This will build on the success of CEDAR's existing decracklers, and should prove extremely effective at removing all forms of crackle, many types of buzz and many distortions."
