Solid State Logic, the world leader in digital and analogue consoles for the music, broadcast, post and film industries, will demonstrate powerful new software and hardware features for the Avant Digital Post/Film console at the 109th annual AES show, held from September 22 to 25 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Booth 701. The 56-channel Avant at the show will have two monitoring positions for one- or two-person operation.

The Avant’s Version 4 software gives users a whole new armory of tools for the posting process. PanPoint panning gives the Avant operator the ability to draw a panning path for a signal against picture using the console bitpad and pen, in addition to using the existing channel pan controls and console joysticks.

SuperGrouper provides a range of powerful new grouping options that offer new ways to link signal controls such as pans and EQ. Exciting and complex effects can be created through tracking EQ curves with panning. These grouping functions work with the PanPoint system, yielding highly creative sonic possibilities when matched to picture, especially in surround mixing.

The new DCTM (Directly Controlled Tape Machine) option supports parallel control of a tape machine, eliminating the requirement for an external synchronizr.

The RIO Grande I/O option provides up to 12 16-channel, 24-bit ADC/DAC cards plus up to four 24-channel AES/EBU cards in a single 14U space. Full PSU redundancy is included in the RIO Grande. This incredibly compact unit yields a total of 192 analogue inputs and outputs, all with individual gain trims, and 96 digital inputs and outputs with sample rate converters.

New Virtual Paddles allow for additional monitoring and recorder control using existing physical paddle switch configurations. For studios with a modest-sized Avant system, the Virtual Paddles enhancement can address the many extra machines employed for a particular session without having to go to outboard controllers or jury-rigged systems. This helps to streamline the posting process for the smaller studio. Recent Avant sales include NHK and Sound City in Tokyo, Sony PCL in Japan, Churobusco in Mexico, Crawford in Atlanta, Maryland Public Television and France 3 (TV Nancy).

"The new features for the Avant address both the practical and creative needs of the industry," states Niall Feldman, Director of Product Management for Solid State Logic. "We at SSL are determined to keep the Avant state-of-the-art through continual feature enhancements. Version 4 for the Avant keeps this commitment."
