dbx Launches 376 Tube Preamp Channel Strip with Digital Out

(Click for a close-up)
September 25, 2000

Designed with the project studio enthusiast in mind, the new dbx 376 ‘Silver Series’ Tube Preamp Channel Strip packs an impressive list of professional amenities into an affordable 1U chassis. Sporting a vacuum tube preamp section, three-band parametric EQ, Compressor, De-Esser and AES/EBU and S/PDIF digital output capabilities, the 376 is the all-inclusive toolbox for digital and analog audio recording applications alike.

The single-channel dbx 376 is ideal for running a signal directly into a digital audio workstation, as well as is the perfect complement to any mixing console. A hand-selected premium 12AU7 vacuum tube on the 376’s front end delivers incredible tube warmth and unparalleled tonal versatility, while a three-band parametric EQ allows users to dial in the precise amount of punch or sparkle. The unit’s Compressor section features rotary controls for Threshold and Ratio, and provides a choice of either standard hard knee or dbx’s envied OverEasy compression (with auto attack and release). Further, a frequency-tunable De-Esser, featuring pots for Frequency and Amount, can remove vocal sibilance and high frequency distortion. The dbx 376 also boasts many of the same features as other products in the Silver Series, such as +48V phantom power, phase invert switch and 75Hz low cut filter.

In addition to XLR and 1/4-inch analog outputs, the 376 includes digital outputs in both AES/EBU and S/PDIF formats as standard. With dbx’s proprietary Type IV™ conversion system, 376 users can capture the essence of tube processing directly into the digital world without leaving the box.

The 376 enables users to select from a wide range of sampling rates, including 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96kHz, while the digital outputs offer the ability to communicate in 16, 20 or 24-bit word lengths. In addition, Type IV™ conversion offers the ability to select noise shapes algorithms and dither types that best suit its users’ music and medium.

Behind the dbx 376’s stunning brushed-silver aluminum face is an all-metal chassis that is incredibly rugged and durable. The high impedance, 1/4-inch instrument input located on the front panel, mic/line switch and 20 dB pad demonstrate dbx’s dedication to providing convenience in the studio. Analog and digital outputs feature independent controls, and the 376’s eight-segment LED meters provide a visual indication of analog or digital levels at a glance. The rear panel includes both mic and line inputs and outputs, word clock sync input and output, and digital outputs.

The manufacturer’s suggested US retail price on the 376 is $599.95.
