Metric Halo Introduces Mobile I/O Series with 2882

September 25, 2000

Metric Halo introduced the Mobile I/O Series of Modular Processing Audio Interfaces at the 109th AES Convention in Los Angeles. The first product in the series, Mobile I/O 2882, is a portable, high-quality, modular FireWire based multi-format audio I/O for professional and multimedia applications. Mobile I/O 2882 supports simultaneous input and output of all the major audio standards, including analog balanced & unbalanced (Mic, Line & Instrument), S/PDIF, AES, and IEEE 1394.

Designed to fit in the standard studio environment in a 1 rack-space unit, dimensions without rack ears are 13.65"x1.75"x10" (approximately the same size as a laptop computer). Mobile I/O is right at home in the studio, as well as an easy-to-carry portable solution.

Mobile I/O 2882 provides on-board low-latency signal processing for seamless foldback mixing in tracking and live sound environments. In addition to 8 line-level outputs, each Mobile I/O 2882 provides an independent stereo headphone mix and output. Analog outputs are all 24-bit 96kHz capable. Four of the analog inputs are 24-bit 96 kHz capable, and the other four are 24-bit 96kHz compatible.

All of the units in the Mobile I/O Series provide wordclock input and output which allows transparent professional interfacing of multiple boxes for larger systems, expandable up to 128 total channels at 96kHz or 256 total channels at 48kHz.

Mobile I/O 2882 will initially support all of the standard professional & multimedia sound driver API's for both Mac and Windows. These include ASIO, Sound Manager, and Wave Drivers. Unlike other emerging 1394 audio solutions, Mobile I/O is based on a fully field-upgradable, programmable audio engine, which future-proofs users against changes to the FireWire spec and provides a low-cost path to future enhancements.

"Mobile I/O provides users with an elegant and portable solution for dealing with audio," notes Metric Halo President Joe Buchalter. "With the shrinking size of high-powered audio capable computers, and the lack of PCI slots in these new machines, the need for high quality, modular, expandable audio systems that do not require PCI cards is becoming critical. Mobile I/O addresses this need and solves the problem."
