December 5, 2001Digital audio workstation manufacturer SADiE has chosen the AES Convention to announce the availability of the SADiE Disc Editor Software version 4.2. The new release is designed both for compatibility with current and future workstation operating systems and to allow users to migrate smoothly and easily from earlier versions without having to learn a completely new user interface.
SADiE4 is a 32-bit application, thus rendering it fully compatible with operating systems designed for professional and industrial applications. With this in mind, the new version is compatible with Windows 2000 Professional as well as systems such as NT4.
"The newest update of SADiE4 reinforces SADiE's commitment to creating a better, faster editing tool for both our existing and future customers." Says SADiE VP Sales & Support Jeff Giedt. "We have incorporated a plethora of convenience features into version 4.2 that may seem minor on a spec sheet, but make a huge difference to daily productivity. Many of these features come from ongoing customer input." Giedt continues, "Our many new customers bring with them work habits and
expectations built around the design of the system they've abandoned. SADiE recognizes that adding these suggestions brings even more depth of function to our comprehensive editing modes."
SADiE4 is designed for current SADiE systems -- 2496, ARTEMiS and RADiA. The latest release, version 4.2, adds a number of new features to the system.
A number of display features have been added, including individual vertical zoom settings for EDL streams, large or small PQ and video stream settings, and enhanced waveform viewing for greater precision while editing.
As one of the many new convenience features of version 4.2, a completely reworked
Trim Editor has been developed for greater functionality, providing a dedicated area where crossfades can be pinpointed and precisely manipulated. A new Fade Linking ability allows the user to further combine and edit fades. A variety of new preset fade shapes are also provided and are made fully editable with direct onscreen click and drag adjustment.
For further convenience, a permanent Navigator Window displaying the full EDL provides an overall frame of reference, while also providing direct access to any point within the program material. A stationary timeline in the EDL eases on-screen monitoring of playback, further enhancing the usefullness of visual reference within the program file.
Users who have a scrolling mouse wheel can now use it in the Playlist, where it provides virtual scrolling, plus vertical and horizontal scrolling in conjunction with the Control or Shift keys respectively. It is now possible to adjust the level of multiple clips, allowing absolute or relative level changes in the Playlist menu or via a hotkey, as well as playing selected entries from the Playlist menu and by hotkey. This feature can be used to quickly play one clip or several separated clips within the EDL. Also in the Playlist menu is an Auto-Return on Stop feature with optional status bar and hotkey, and the ability to turn the scroll display on or off -- a useful feature for declicking and other high zoom level operations.
An interesting function requested by several users and now incorporated in the software is the ability to enable reverse faders in a group -- in other words, when you push one up the others go down. This is achieved simply by right-clicking on the fader group button. There are also several new assignable hotkeys.
The new release is rounded out by a number of additional function enhancements. A new auto-place mode provides "End of fade in to current time," and both multiple components
and non-SADiE files (such as docs, CMX EDLs, text files, etc.) can be imported into a
project. Such non-SADiE files are included in backups and may also be opened with the appropriate application by double-clicking. Other backup enhancements include a feature that generates a report on approximate project backup size in the Backup dialog for guidance purposes. The new 4.2 software also provides the convenience of multichannel bouncing, allowing high-res 5.1 mixes to be combined down to a single file for easier transfer and manipulation purposes.
"A lot of the changes in this release were based directly on a great deal of user input," Giedt concluded. "We want to help editors get their work done faster and easier."
SADiE Version 4.2 software will begin shipping in Q4 of 2001.
