The SP451 is designed to work with the B Format outputs of the Mark V or ST250 SoundField Microphone Systems. From the B Format outputs, either in real-time or from tape, the SP451 delivers a high quality, full band, discrete left/center/right (L/C/R), surround left/surround right (SL/SR) "mic" output plus a subwoofer (<80Hz) "mic" output. Each of these six "mic" outputs has its own level control and output level meter, plus the five mic array has individually definable mic patterns. The surround mic array patterns are determined by internally installed MAP cards. A cardioid L/C/R/SL/SR card is supplied as standard. Two further cards can be added to create almost any five mic array configuration imaginable and any one of these cards can be selected from the front panel.

Ken Giles, SoundField Director of Sales, comments, "This product represents a real breakthrough in surround recording, there is simply nothing else out there that competes. The SP451 system means it isn't necessary to decide what type of output configuration you need before recording SoundField's B Format. These decisions can be made later. Because so much is possible in post, the user can address many different applications with same equipment and methods, lowering cost and on-site effort and set-up time. Even more exciting is that the SP451 is forward compatible, allowing other surround applications such as 6.1 or 7.1."
