Princeton Digital Debuts First Product: the Reverb 2016

October 8, 2002

Princeton Digital introduced its first product, the Reverb 2016, a 1U rack-mount device that recreates the original reverb algorithms of the Eventide SP2016 -- Stereo Room, Room Reverb and High Density Plate. These algorithms were the result of a five-year effort that began at Eventide in 1978 culminating in the introduction of the SP2016 in 1983. All aspects of the original reverbs have been painstakingly duplicated including every detail of the user parameters. The innovative user interface of the Reverb 2016 features menu-free ergonomics whereby settings are evident at-a-glance and are fully optimized for the studio and for front-of-house applications.

The SP2016 reverbs have attracted a loyal user base because of a particular blend of art and science. They sound distinctive. The algorithms simulate the sound of a real enclosure - from the complex early reflections, to the natural way in which the echo density increases with time, to the smooth Gaussian decay of the reverb tail.

While the algorithms are identical to the originals, the hardware implementation is state-of-the-art, with features that include a high performance 24 bit DSP, 24 bit balanced analog I/O, digital I/O and MIDI interface.

The Reverb 2016 is built to reverb -- it's not a multi-effects box. Based on the requirements of both live and studio engineers, it was created from the perspective that reverb warrants a dedicated box with an optimized, 'one knob, one job' user interface. The Reverb 2016s user interface features dedicated controls for each parameter. As a result, the 2016 is extremely easy to use, and the tactile Logicator controls and display are highly intuitive and reflect parameter settings even in low light situations. Up to 99 user presets can be stored.

While recreating the original reverbs is the Reverb 2016's 'raison d'etre', the temptation to create a new reverb algorithm, one that squeezes every last MIP out of the 120MHz DSP, proved to be irresistible. And so, the Reverb 2016 features one new algorithm, an enhanced version of the originals. The "New" reverb represents the natural evolution of the development work which took full advantage of the unique array processing power of the SP2016.

Over the course of twenty years these reverbs have become legendary and continue to be used today running on the handful of coveted SP2016s still in operation. Dedicated SP2016 owners have asked that these 'classic' reverbs be ported to modern hardware/software platforms. Princeton Digital now makes these legendary effects available once again, to everyone. Reverb 2016 is scheduled to ship in the first quarter of 2003.

Princeton Digital was founded in August 2001 by Tony Agnello who worked at Eventide Inc from 1972 through 1982 where he developed the first Eventide Harmonizer and the SP2016 - products that pioneered some of audio's most popular digital effects. Princeton Digital's mission is to leverage the advances in signal processing power of the last twenty years to offer legendary effects on modern hardware and to take the next steps in audio effects processing.
