Yamaha Debuts MSP10 Studio Nearfield Monitors

October 8, 2002

Designed for professional applications, the MSP10 Studio takes over where its predecessors left off--with internal design innovations, improved materials, and significant refinements to both the midrange performance and crossover parameters.

The MSP10 Studio features an advanced bi-amped design, with components that are aligned with micron-tolerance, ideally matched and precisely tuned for the best possible performance. The 4-ohm 8" cone woofer is driven by a 120-watt power amplifier; the 8-ohm 1" titanium dome tweeter has its own 60-watt power amplifier, resulting in balance between low-mid and high frequency ranges, a smooth high frequency response up to and beyond 40 kHz, and an integrated waveguide that achieves uniform dispersion over 120 degrees--ideal for surround monitoring.

Line-level electronic crossovers feature steep 30 dB/octave roll-off curves in both low and high-pass filters. The result is minimal inter-modulation at the crossover point, and a significantly smoother performance in the critical midrange.

"Today, high sample rate digital source material and ultra-accurate reproduction media are rapidly becoming the norm," states Wayne Hrabak, marketing manager, Yamaha Professional Audio. "Nearfield monitor technology must, in turn, evolve in order to rise to that quality. The Yamaha MSP10 Studio is the combination of research and significant improvements, and is set to become the new standard for audio professionals."

Improved materials and manufacturing techniques include a mineral-impregnated polypropylene woofer cone with low-damping rubber surround, and a magnetic shielding circuit which eliminates virtually all electromagnetic fields, allowing the monitors to be positioned near recording equipment, computers and video displays. Constructed of high-quality MDF (medium density fiber) material, the MSP10 Studio enclosure features internal bracing, a precise 2-mm edge radius, and a multiple layer lacquer finish to ensure resonance-free operation.

"The sound delivered by most powered speakers is sufficient, but not accurate enough for critical monitoring applications," states John Schauer, product manager, Professional Audio. "The MSP10 Studio was designed to provide accurate, uncolored sound reproduction for today's production needs."

The rear panel features balanced XLR inputs, an input sensitivity control, response trim switches for both the woofer and tweeter, and an 80 Hz low cut switch that is useful when using the MSP10 Studio with the SW10 Subwoofer.

The MSP10 Studio will be available in November 2002. An optional bracket (Model BWS251-300) is available for wall mounting.
