Known for its broadcast and professional digital audio products, Otari has announced the new DR-10N, a 2-channel disk-based recorder/editor aimed at the broadcast and postproduction market.

The DR-10N consists of a 3U high rack-mounting central unit with an optional edit remote controller. The main unit includes a built-in hard disk and one removable MO drive, with provisions for an additional MO drive. 2-channel analog line level or AES/EBU digital input signals can be recorded as WAV files (WAV, BWF, and BWF-J formats). The DR-10N utilizes linear PCM at standard sample rates between 32 and 96 kHz, with 16- or 24-bit word lengths. Playback of 4-track L/R mix outputs or two stereo outputs is supported, with reverse and +/-12.5% varispeed play. The front panel display on the main unit includes a 2-channel bargraph level meter (L+R when two stereo pairs are used), plus timecode or elapsed time indication. A front panel menu-driven configuration system is used for setup.

A graphical user interface provides quick and clear visual access to all DR-10N parameters, including project information, program time, sample/bit rates, record/playback status, and audio waveform display. Edit data such as Locate points and Mark In/Out edit points, highlighted for use with all of the available Edit functions (i.e. delete, cut, copy, paste, insert, merge), are also viewable. Rounding out the visual and functional appeal of this GUI are the DR-10N's gradient soft level meters with switchable Peak/Average ballistics.

Familiar transport controls are provided on the front panel for machine room or local use, with record, play, stop, fast forward, and rewind buttons. SMPTE/EBU longitudinal or VITC vertical interval timecode may be used to source or chase timecode from a VTR or other source. The DR-10N may be synchronized to a variety of sources, as is standard with Otari digital audio products: video, word clock, or imbedded AES/EBU clock may be used as sync sources.

A range of powerful Edit Functions are provided with the optional CB-182 Edit Controller. This remote control unit integrates with DR-10N's sophisticated graphic user interface, providing simple and intuitive editing, full transport control including a jog/shuttle wheel, and quick remote access of all machine functions. Edits, such as copy, paste, etc., may be applied to two stereo pairs (four virtual tracks). Fade in, fade out, and crossfade times are fully adjustable. Special record functions are provided, such as Auto Punch for pre-set record enable, along with a level-sensing Auto Record function, which automatically enables recording when the DR-10N senses an input signal at a specified threshold level.

A range of locator and broadcast cue functions are provided, along with jog/shuttle playback from 1/32x to 2x normal speed. Time expansion and compression as well as pitch shift are standard features, along with a zoomable sample level waveform display. Multiple levels of Undo/Redo are also included.

The remote offers instant playback of edited WAV files from up to two parallel stereo pairs. Two faders are included with fader start/stop switches and independent line out on/off switching. 24 trigger buttons may be assigned to either of two outputs, and a pause/stop control is provided. With the optional CB-183-S Quick Play Controller, digitally sampled sounds can be recorded and subsequently triggered for playback via the assigned Cue Buttons on the CB-183-S remote.

The DR-10N includes built-in Ethernet capability for audio networking, as well as software for the download and upload of standard WAV files from and to a network audio server. The recording and editing of additional metadata files is also supported.
