DPA's MSS6000 Target Stringed Instrument Applications

October 14, 2003

At the AES show, DPA Microphones introduced a professional microphone and preamp system to amplify stringed instruments. The Danish manufacturer has designed the MSS6000 Microphone Summation System in response to feedback received from engineers and sound designers searching for a flexible, easy-to-use solution for miking instruments such as violin, cello and bass.

A single MSS6000 system can control up to 10 stringed instruments, reducing an entire section down to two channels on a mixing console, freeing up many useful and costly channels on the stage box and the console.

The system consists of five Stereo Satellite Boxes, each channel offering individual level and pan adjustments and a Stereo Master Sum Box containing two transformer-coupled mic pre amplifiers. The entire system fits into a compact brief case for easy transportability. The system can be set up in a matter of minutes using the microphone mounting accessories for strings, which leaves the instruments mechanically intact and delivers high sound levels before feedback. A complete set of 10 DPA 4061-BM Miniature Microphones is also supplied with the system.

The whole system is powered by two channels of 48V phantom power from a mixing console, eliminating the need for a separate power supply unit.
