NEMO DMC-1 Class A Monitor Controller from Nautilus Master Technology

November 1, 2004

New from Nautilus Master Technology id the NEMO DMC-1, a Class-A monitor section. For use in pro or home studios, the unit gives powerful features for Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) users, along with an improved monitor signal path for analog console users. Like the full-featured NEMO DMC-8, the controller offers instantaneous level-matched A-B comparisons to help produce better mixes.

Sharing the same discrete circuit path as the DMC-8, the more economical DMC-1 controls the monitoring of the stereo buss source and (2) 2 Track returns so that you can effectively listen to your mix as well as CD/SACD's/previous mixes, etc., and have tone-accurate (not level-dominated) references. This feature solves the problems presented by the widely varying levels on commercial productions.

Nautilus Master Technology's founder John Vestman, designed the DMC-1 to give DAW users a more modestly priced version of the DMC-8 which has VU meters, more inputs/outputs and other functions. Vestman has used audiophile listening systems for over 26 years and recommends that engineers listen critically to the best commercial productions.

He states, "The DMC-1 prevents A-B frustrations by putting a front-panel volume control right there on the 2 Track returns. This lets you hear instant tone and balance distinctions which give you a 'master' perspective on your mixes. With Class-A resolution you can reference two other sources and really know how your sound holds up next to any artist's best production."

This retro-style unit features balanced inputs as well as RCA inputs for connecting to a consumer CD player/burner. Pushbuttons also select Mono, left and right mutes, dim, and stereo buss pad. A special function connects the analog output of one 2 Track and sends it to the input of another machine for copies.

While the new concepts in the NEMO DMC-1 are distinctly Vestman's, the electronic design is by Inward Connections. Steve Firlotte's precision circuitry is coupled with the SPA690 discrete amp block electronics of John Hall, renowned designer of early Langevin products. The highest quality components are utilized throughout (no surface-mount components), precision pots, all in a rock-solid enclosure.

The unit has a voltage selector, (2) stereo buss-thru outputs, as well as a high-end audiophile power cord (retail - $365.00) by Virtual Dynamics.
