The latest from Soundcraft is the GB4, a dual-mode, four-bus mixing console, which utilizes the GB30 mic preamps and EQ designed by founder Graham Blyth for the company's 30th anniversary last year. The desk is designed with mid-sized fixed installations, such as clubs, theatres, and houses of worship, as well as regional touring sound systems, in mind.

Available in 12- to 40-mono-channel frame sizes, each with two full-featured stereo channels, the desk sports a dual-mode topology, borrowed from the MH Series desks, allowing it to be used on FOH or monitor duties, with fader control of group or aux outputs.

Although largely conventional in layout, the GB4 does have some unique mechanical features. The rugged steel chassis has a sloping rear connector panel so that it is easier to configure from the front of the desk, while the integral power supply has a link option for an external back-up PSU.

Four mute groups allow several channels to be muted simultaneously, while another unique facility is the limiter on a set of dedicated record outputs making it easier to create a stereo recording of the mix. The console also features an output matrix with seven feeds to four outputs, being fed from the group buses and main L, R, and C (mono) outputs.

Careful attention has been given to the mechanical construction to ensure reliability under strenuous conditions, with all input modules being constructed with individual vertically-mounted PCBs fitted to the steel chassis front panel with individually-nutted potentiometers.

Additional amenities of the GB4 include: direct outputs on every channel, two stereo returns, talkback facilities, 100mm faders, switchable +48V phantom power on every channel, eight aux sends (four being pre/post switchable), 18dB/octave high pass filters, and 12-segment LED metering.

The GB4 offers a comprehensive set of functions and facilities in a small and cost-effective footprint, and delivers the high performance, quality, and reliability one would expect from a Soundcraft product.

Suggested US retail pricing on the GB4 is as follows:

  • 12 mono + 2 stereo channels: $2,399.99
  • 16 mono + 2 stereo channels: $2,799.99
  • 24 mono + 2 stereo channels: $3,799.99
  • 32 mono + 2 stereo channels: $4,599.99
  • 40 mono + 2 stereo channels: $5,999.99
