Cycling '74 has released Soundflowerbed, a monitoring application for its free Soundflower audio routing utility for Mac OS X. Soundflowerbed resides in the OS X menu bar allowing the user to tap into Soundflower channels and route them to an audio output device. Soundflowerbed is useful when the user is sending audio to and from applications but unable to send audio through another device to monitor audio output. Soundflower is a free system extension for Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3 that allows users to route audio between Core Audio applications. Cycling '74 developed Soundflower as a way to allow applications developed with its Max/MSP audio environment to process audio originating from other programs. However, Soundflower can be used for more general audio routing tasks, patching either 2- or 16-channel data at 32-bit sample depth between any applications that support standard Core Audio driver selection. Soundflower can also be selected as a "default device" in the Audio/MIDI Setup utility for programs such as iTunes that do not allow the selection of a specific output device. Soundflowerbed is available as a free download on Cycling '74's web site. For more information, visit their web site at http://www.cycling74.com/.
