Responding to the increasing presence of fiber optic cable systems in live audio applications, Yamaha Commercial Audio announces the AES debut of the Riedel Artist 1D, a fiber optic-based, long-haul cable solution for the Yamaha PM1D digital mixing system. Developed and manufactured by Riedel (Germany), Artist 1D is produced in collaboration with, and distributed solely by, Yamaha.

The Artist 1D system is housed in a 19-in. rack-mountable 1RU space and requires a local (front of house) and distant (stage) unit for operation. Users can run a cable length up to 500 meters using multimode fiber, and a length of up to 20 meters from the Artist 1D to the PM1D's CS1D or DSP1D unit.

"The professional audio industry has followed the video industry's lead in moving toward fiber optic systems for low-profile signal transport," states Larry Italia, general manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio. "The Artist 1D not only provides a quick and easy solution, but it also eliminates the concerns typically associated with traditional transport systems, such as cumbersome setups, electromagnetic fields and long distance signal deterioration."

Currently available, the Artist 1D includes an internal redundant power supply and redundant fiber optic cable capable of carrying control, word clock and RS232 information, and provides a bi-directional link of up to 80 channels of audio. Connections include an RJ-45 connector for firmware updating (10 Base T, TCP/IP protocol); SCSI for FOH inserts using AI-8/AO-8, or DIO-8; and Word clock I/O. The Artist 1D can function as word clock master or slave, and is compatible with the PM1D Mirror Mode for DSP redundancy.

With the Artist 1D, users can switch IDs between local and distant units without any additional setup procedures. The digital I/O connector automatically detects whether an I/O unit or DSP1D is connected to it, and also performs periodic ID diagnostic sensing to convey its current status.
