121st AES Convention Papers: Ambitious And Enlightening

October 6, 2006

For fifty-six years Technical Papers have been pillars of Audio Engineering Society events. Long before technology introductions elevated the AES Convention into a leading technology exposition, its primary purpose was to serve as a platform for the exchange of information and ideas. That objective continues to define the organization's underlying purpose.

"Technical Papers and Posters represent the benefits of dedicated research," says AES 121st Convention Committee Chair John Strawn. "Presenting their findings to an AES audience provides scientists, software and hardware developers and theorists with an invaluable opportunity to reach out to their peers, and to use this educated group as a sounding board. Papers Co-Chairs Rob Maher and Christopher J. Struck and a panel of anonymous technical peer reviewers evaluated a massive number of submissions to fashion a world-class program for the 121st AES Convention."

"Our goal was two-fold," Rob Maher reports. "We were primarily concerned with selecting the most relevant proposals and then with organizing them in logical groupings. To this end we have coordinated sessions focused on High Resolution and Live Sound, Audio Coding, Instrumentation and Measurement, Psychoacoustics, Signal Processing and a number of other specific issues. We are particularly pleased with the international range of this year's submissions which include North and South America, Europe and Asia, academic institutions, large and small commercial entities and individual consultants. Cumulatively we feel we have developed a program that will substantially increase the industry's ability to better serve the public," Maher adds.

Papers Co-Chair Christopher J. Struck explains the difference between Paper and Poster sessions is size and focus. Papers are geared to large audiences of 50 to 100, while Posters are designed for smaller groups and more interactive discussion," says Struck. "I'm pleased that this year's Convention offers an incredible diversity of subjects.

"Attendees will be challenged to narrow down their list of sessions to a manageable number," Struck concludes. "The Calendar of Events at www.aes.org will provide considerable information to help them coordinate their schedules. The titles below illustrate the depth and diversity of the subject matter being addressed in both the Paper and the Poster sessions.
