Ensoniq Spotlighting Final Versions of PARIS Digital Audio Worstation

Fully Integrated 24-bit Digital Audio Production System incorporates versatile range of 1/0 Interfaces and TimeCode Lock-to-Picture.

September 26, 1997

Highlight of ENSONIQ Digital Systems' booth at the 103rd Audio Engineering Society Convention, which open here today, will be the formal unveiling of PARIS, a revolutionary 24-bit, disk-based Digital Audio Solution. PARIS --Professional Audio Recording Integrated System - is a truly versatile, expandable recording, editing, mixing, and processing environment that has a variety of applications throughout the pro-audio industry. All standard mixer controls, including faders, panning and returns, are fully automated.

"We have designed PARIS with one goal in mind," stresses ENSONIQ Vice President Dan Garrett. "To provide speed, power and expandability at prices that are revolutionary. The basic system's low entry cost, together with transparent cross-platform functionality and open-ended expansion options, is destined to make PARIS a compelling solution for anyone working with high-quality audio, including recording facilities, film/post-production houses, musicians, project studios, multimedia producers and broadcasters."

PARIS is a totally integrated digital audio recording system; it includes all the hardware and software needed to record, mix and process audio tracks on a PC or Mac. And because PARIS was designed from the ground up as a complete system, it is simple, reliable, expandable and totally compatible. This feature-rich package combines ENSONIQ's award winning 24-bit DSP technology, innovative card design, and advanced manufacturing techniques to create a powerful, user-friendly system that offers outstanding 24-bit record and playback quality.

In addition to the same superb effects available in ENSONIQ's fully professional DP/Pro 24-bit Effects Processor, a number of third-party plug-in developers have already committed to developing new effects and DSP packages for PARIS, and/or porting existing Mac OS/Windows-compatible software for use on the system. New announcements are expected to be made during the AES Convention.

PARIS' core system consists of an ENSONIQ EDS-1000 PCI card, a cross-platform CD-ROM containing both MacOS- and Windows 95-compatible software, and a 16-channel Control Surface. Each EDS-1000 PCI card provides real-time access to 16 channels of 24-bit digital audio, with four bands of fully parametric, multi-mode EQ, as well as pan and fader control. Eight assignable stereo aux sends and eight stereo aux returns are provided. Insert effects, such as compressors, limiters and gates, can also be assigned to individual input channels. All DSP resources are dynamically assigned.

Full-Feature Software for Creative Professionals The PARIS audio recording , editing and processing software provides an intuitive and highly responsive graphic interface for the system's digital mixer, complete with automation, parametric EQ, aux sends, MIDI capabilities, timecode sync and real-time dynamic effects processing. Also included is a comprehensive suite of plug-in effects including reverb, chorus, delay, and various dynamics processors. A plug-in architecture supports third-party development of additional effects and software features. PARIS also supports the use of multiple cards to further extend real-time processing power and 1/0 capability.

PARIS features free-form editing, an innovative method of working that allows fast and highly powerful segment editing. The PARIS software also utilizes an intelligent background processing system for waveform. overview computation, submix recomputation, and non-real time DSP functions, including sample rate conversion. This background processing function allows the user to continue to work while background tasks are being performed.

"The EDS Hardware Control Surface has been designed specifically to function with PARIS application software," explains ENSONIQ Project Leader Scott Peer. "It dramatically improves user ergonomics by providing immediate physical access to all of the most important control features." Features include 16 Channel Faders; a Master Stereo Fader; rotary controls for EQ, aux sends, pan and control room monitor level; a high resolution jog/shuttle wheel; transport controls with autolocate; numeric keypad; mute and solo buttons.

PARIS is available in three bundled versions. Each bundle includes a Control Surface, EDS-1000 PCI card, and cross-platform PARIS Software. The different Input/Output options will determine the particular bundle.

  • PARIS Bundle 1 - Core systems and Interface 2, a basic two-channel external interface, with two inputs, two outputs and connection to the Interface 422 and Interface MEC.
  • PARIS Bundle 2 - Core systems and Interface 442, an advanced rack-mountable enclosure that provides four analog inputs, four analog outputs and one S/P DIF digital input and output, plus external sync input.
  • PARIS Bundle 3 - Core systems and Interface MEC (Modular Expansion Chassis), a five-space rack-mountable enclosure that houses various user- installable multi- channel analog and digital 1/0 interface modules - S/P DIF, AES/EBU, ADAT optical and Tascam TDIF formats - as well as video and word-clock sync.
PARIS is the result of a long-term joint development program between ENSONIQ and Intelligent Devices, a firm responsible for several highly successful Mac-based DSP and processing software applications.
