SADiE Debuts Artemis DAW

October 3, 1999 Studio Audio & Video Ltd., designers and manufacturers of the SADiE Digital Editing systems, debuted their new digital audio workstation Artemis at the 1999 AES convention in New York. The system is capable of 192kHz editing and mixing, full surround sound panning, and can be configured to provide up to 24 inputs and outputs. The Artemis DAW is shipping now and is available worldwide.

The Artemis is the latest system in the SADiE digital audio workstation range, and has been designed to fulfil applications requiring large amounts of digital signal processing. Artemis is therefore perfect for any audio editing application including music editing, CD mastering, DVD production, and Film & TV post production.

Artemis systems are supplied as fully configured, rack mounting turnkey systems in a range of input/output configurations, from 8 to 24 inputs and outputs. The entry level Artemis system is equipped with 8 inputs and 8 outputs and can replay 24 tracks of edited 16-bit audio. 20-bit analogue conversion is built into the system and external converters are provided for by AES/EBU digital I/O on every channel.

Support for 24-bit 96kHz and 192kHz audio editing is standard, making every Artemis system ready for DVD. The 8 channels of I/O make Artemis perfect for surround sound editing and mixing, which is supplied as standard in the SADiE software. All internal audio processing utilises 32-bit floating-point accuracy, ensuring the highest possible sound quality throughout the system.

Every system includes full timecode support and 4 channels of RS422 interface. The supplied Breakout Box 800 includes 8 channels of XLR digital I/O, XLR digital reference input, RS422 9-pin I/O, XLR timecode I/O, and 8 channels of unbalanced analogue I/O. The optional Breakout Box 800B adds balanced XLR analogue inputs and outputs at standard operating levels. All Artemis systems include on-board SCSI interfaces for direct communication with audio disk storage, CDR, DLT DDS or Exabyte drives.

The SADiE 3 software includes a true event based, sample accurate automation system. All of SADiE’s mixer controls can be automated, including levels, positions, EQ parameters, joystick position, etc. More importantly, all automation data is locked not just to the event or clip but to the actual audio sample within that event. When a clip is moved, copied or edited, any automation data already written will be moved or copied alongside the audio itself.

SADiE 3 also offers Macintosh® disk support including read/write of AIFF and SDII audio files directly without any translation. There are also a number of other new formats available, which allow audio to be transferred into Windows 95 and NT programs. Plus, the software allows the creation of edit decision lists (EDLs) and audio files to be directly imported into AudioFile®. More importantly, SADiE EDLs can be created from a mix of any file or disk format currently supported SADiE and this feature is entirely transparent to the user.

All SADiE automation data can be displayed and edited graphically. SADiE also provides an easy interface for snapshot automation when a particular effect on one or more clips is wanted - for example, adding telephone voice effects to every other clip on a stream using this feature couldn’t be easier.

SADiE 3 includes full support for the new high-density, high resolution audio that is becoming necessary for DVD and other high quality formats. 24-bit digital editing and all sample rates up to 96kHz and even 192kHz have been added as a free upgrade within the software.
