Audio Technica AT-891R Boundary Mic w/Touch Control

January 1, 1997Audio-Technica has introduced the AT891R, a unidirectional boundary microphone featuring a touch-sensitive switch to provide convenient user control.

An excellent choice for surface-mounted miking applications, including high-quality sound reinforcement, professional recording, television and teleconferencing, the wide-range condenser microphone features a half-cardioid polar pattern (cardioid in hemisphere above mounting surface) and ultra-flat frequency response.

The versatile AT891R offers three modes of operation. "Touch On/Touch Off" mode allows the user to activate the microphone by pressing the touch-sensitive panel at the front of the housing, then requires another touch for deactivation. "Momentary On" activates the microphone only while the switch is touched, while "Momentary Off" performs the opposite by disabling the signal only when the switch is touched. A conveniently-located three-way DIP switch on the underside of the microphone selects the mode of operation, and a red LED on top of the housing indicates when the microphone is active.

Operating on 9-52V phantom power, the AT891R requires no external power module to produce its low-impedance balanced output. A two-position switch on the microphone's underside permits the selection of a flat or low-roll-off response. The fixed-charge "back plate" condenser element is housed in a sturdy case and protected by two layers of perforated steel. Packaged with a 25-foot (7.6m) output cable terminating in TA3F and XLRM-type connectors, the AT891R has a field-replaceable element and a low-profile housing with low-reflectance black finish. A rubber, non-slip bottom pad minimizes mechanical coupling of surface vibrations to the microphone.
