Sonic Foundry Releases ACID DJ and ACID Rock

December 4, 1998Sonic Foundry® (Amex: SFO), a developer and marketer of digital audio software for the Windows platform, has released two new entry-level versions of their popular ACID program: ACID(TM) DJ and ACID Rock.

ACID allows you to quickly create songs by dragging samples out of the included library of sounds and dropping them into the desired track location. Both ACID DJ and ACID Rock include over 600 royalty-free loops, but the DJ version naturally focuses on dance music styles (urban, house, techno, industrial, acid jazz, and hip-hop) while the Rock version covers rock music styles (metal, classic, hard, grunge, and alternative). A variety of different instruments are included in both versions, but ACID DJ dabbles into unusual noises while ACID Rock contains more rhythm and solo guitar loops. You can even add your own instruments or vocals to the song by connecting a microphone to your sound card.

Making music with ACID is so easy because the program automatically makes the proper adjustments to keep the loops in the key and tempo you specify. You don't need to worry about key signatures, sharps and flats, or transposing anything. Simply fill the tracks (up to eight are available) with loops you select. When you are happy with your song, you can save it as a .wav file or a .asf file for use on the web.

Both ACID Rock and ACID DJ can make use of the loop libraries that have already been released, so hundreds of new loops are available to you. If you need a little more power however, you should consider moving up to ACID Music which allows unlimited tracks and effects. You can get even more features, including support for DirectX plug-ins, by moving up to the original version of ACID, which has a list price of $399.
