SoftStep v1.2 is a Windows 95/98 based modular MIDI step sequencer patterned
somewhat after the big modular analog step sequencers. But SoftStep goes far beyond
its step sequencer roots, to provide algorithmic composing tools of all kinds,
including fractal, chaos, probability, and numerical based algorithms of virtually
unlimited flexibility.
Like the big analogs, the composing elements in SoftStep are Modules, which
in SoftStep are math and logic functions that are treated as physical boxes with
knobs, sliders, and switches. But with SoftStep there are more modules than the
most monstrous of the physical analog machines, which musicians can freely create,
destroy, move around, connect and reconnect.
SoftStep LE ("Limited Edition") is not just a stripped down version
of SoftStep v1.2 - Rather it is essentially the original SoftStep v1.0 Step Sequencer,
brought up to the same revision level as SoftStep v1.2, but focused directly on
the kind of step sequencing found in the old Analog Modular synths, and without
the SoftStep 1.2 fractal and other general algorithmic composing modules.
Both versions of SoftStep are available as free, fully functional, 15 day
evaluation downloads from Algorithmic Arts. Registration for SoftStep LE is $39.
SoftStep v1.2 is $129 (free to currently registered SoftStep users).
