October 30, 2001

The ADI-8 DD has started shipping world wide. The Universal Format Converter, which should have been shipping in April, has been enhanced with a lot of new features and modes. The device now consists of two digital format converters with each up to 16 channels. It offers 28 different conversion modes, all with 24 bit resolution. Both converters can independently use one of the inputs AES, ADAT or TDIF, and convert those simultaneously to ADAT, TDIF and AES. Thanks to the freely available inputs all attached devices can send signals to each other without the need to rearrange the cabling between them.

Four AES/EBU inputs and outputs each (XLR) plus two ADAT optical and TDIF I/Os each allow for full 8-channel operation, even at 24bit/96kHz. Switchable 24bit/96kHz sample rate converters (SRC) allow for both highest quality sample rate conversion and clock decoupling of all AES/EBU inputs, which are fully SPDIF compatible.

The ADI-8 DD supports Sample Split, S/MUX, Double Wire and Double Line. It is thus compatible to all known methods of raising the sample rate by sample distribution, on all supported platforms, and can also convert between these formats. The device can be stacked without limit, all devices will be sample synchronous by using word clock.

The actual states of incoming and outgoing signals and ongoing operations within the unit are displayed by 60 LEDs in an easy to view way. SyncCheck, already found in other RME products, not only shows if an input signal is locked, but also if multiple inputs are in synchronicity. Furthermore RME's SyncAlign technology prevents accidental errors of ± 1 sample misalignment between the AES/EBU inputs. The AES output signal can be set to Professional or Consumer subcode. The first output (channel 1/2) can optionally be output optically (TOSLINK).

Application examples:

  • AES/EBU front-end for RME's digital I/O cards (ADAT optical I/O)
  • TDIF front-end for RME's digital I/O cards (ADAT optical I/O)
  • AES- and ADAT front-end for DTRS machines
  • Serves as 8-channel AES, TDIF and ADAT I/O for all digital mixing desks with ADAT or TDIF port
  • Allows to operate 4 SPDIF or AES devices, no matter which sample rate or clock reference those use, on every digital network

Conversion modes (selection):

  • 8-channel AES to ADAT optical || TDIF converter (96 kHz)
  • 2-channel AES to 8-channel TDIF || ADAT splitter (96 kHz)
  • 16-channel ADAT / TDIF to ADAT || TDIF converter (48 kHz)
  • 8-channel ADAT / TDIF to AES converter (96 kHz)
  • 8-channel AES to AES Sample Rate Converter (96 kHz)
  • 2-channel AES to 8-channel AES splitter (96 kHz)
  • 4-channel AES Double Wire to AES Single Wire converter (96 kHz)
  • 4-channel AES Single Wire to AES Double Wire converter (96 kHz)
  • 8-channel ADAT / TDIF to ADAT || TDIF Sample Rate Converter (96 kHz)

(ADAT || TDIF means that the output signal is present in parallel, i.e. at the same time on the ADAT and TDIF outputs. ADAT / TDIF means that the input can be either ADAT or TDIF.)
