Opcode Debuts Studio 128X Cross-Platform MIDI Interface

March 11, 1998 Today's project studios are often over-flowing with multi-timbral synthesizers, digital multi-effectors and automated mixers, all of which require MIDI connection to be used to their fullest. Professional-level interfaces which can handle the connections such a studio demands are often either limited in what software and computer combinations they'll work with, or priced far out of reach of the average musician. Opcode Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has found a solution.

Designed to work with both Macintosh and PC-compatible systems, the Studio 128X provides eight fully independent MIDI inputs and outputs allowing for up to 128 channels of simultaneous MIDI input and output. The 128X also supports SMPTE synchronization and features full MIDI patchbay capabilities. This massive connectivity and entry-level price-point make the Studio 128X ideal for any size set-up. From beginners starting out with an eye towards expansion to professional-level recording installations, the 128X's expansion capabilities guarantee that it will not be out-grown.

Up to four Studio 128X's can be linked together providing a massive system with 512 simultaneous MIDI channels. Linked systems can also include Opcode's Studio 64, Studio XTC, and Studio 4 interfaces as components.

The Studio 128X automatically detects what kind of computer it's connected to and changes its settings accordingly. Full support of the Open Music System (OMS) connection protocol provides easy set-up and seamless use with all major sequencing software for Macintosh and PC. For synchronization, the 128X can read and write SMPTE time code in all formats including 29.97 non-drop. MIDI Time Code and MIDI Beat Clock are also fully supported.

The Studio 128X also functions as a full MIDI patchbay with extensive routing and merging capabilities. Any in or combination of ins can be directly routed to any out(s).

On-board MIDI filtering allows users to slim down the data stream by removing the data types of their choosing. Eight user-memory locations are provided for easy storage of patchbay set-ups. Stored configurations can be instantly recalled from the front panel of the 128X or remotely via computer.

Other features include: an additional two pairs of MIDI INs and OUTs on the 128X's front panel for quick connections, a Peripheral Thru switch to provide access to printers and modems without rewiring, and battery backed-up memory for the retention of user settings on power-down.
