PRESS RELEASE

dbx 1034 Stereo/Mono Crossover/Limiter

July 12, 1996

Designed with the professional touring and permanent install markets in mind, the new dbx 1034 electronic crossover/ limiter features dbx's proprietary PeakStopPlus(TM) limiting on every band of its two channels.

Combining superb sonic characteristics and paramount system protection, the single-rack-space dbx 1034 provides either three-way stereo or four-way mono (back panel switch-selectable) for medium to large multi-band sound reinforcement systems. The crossover offers the option of a summed low-frequency output (mono subwoofer out), as well as a switchable circuit that adds pre-emphasis for constant directivity horns. This pre-emphasis helps to compensate for the horns' natural roll-off or naturally occurring deficiencies in response.

Three eight-stage lightpipe ladders on each channel allow the operator to easily monitor how much gain reduction the PeakStopPlus circuit is applying to the individual bands as well as the output level. Each band is also equipped with lightpipe phase invert and mute switches.

All rotary controls are precision-detented pot which provide accurate, tactile control over the 1034's parameters. Input and outputs are RFI filtered, while outputs are electronically servo-balanced to maintain constant levels into balanced or unbalanced loads. All rear panel input and output jacks are gold-plated Neutrik(TM) XLR-type connectors.

Highly accurate 24dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley crossover filters in a state-variable configuration assure a flat frequency response when the outputs are summed acoustically and have the added benefit of coherent phase response of adjacent outputs. The 24dB per octave slope also protects drivers by rapidly rolling off frequencies beyond the crossover points. Over-excursion of low-frequency drivers in vented box enclosures is prevented by 18Hz Hi Pass third-order Butterworth filters. These filters may be bypassed internally if desired.

A low-frequency range x10 switch on each channel can multiply the low/mid crossover frequency range of the front-panel marking by a factor of 10. Each channels' output gain may also be adjusted +/-12dB, while an optional security panel may be attached to protect control settings.

The dbx 1034 is ideal for improving system intelligibility and sound quality, as well as tri-amping or quad-amping to increase amplifier efficiency. Bands and touring companies using multi-way systems will find the 1034 to be an important tool, while the unit can also be effectively used in conjunction with high-end studio monitor and home theater systems.
