Alesis Ships New ADAT-XT(TM) 8 Track Digital Audio Recorder January 18, 1996
Alesis Corporation announced that they have begun shipping the new ADAT-XT 8 Track Digital Audio Recorder, according to Douglas White, Alesis Director of Sales. The ADAT-XT is the next generation of Alesis' popular ADAT digital recorder.
"The ADAT-XT has surpassed our greatest expectations, both in terms of product functionality and dealer and consumer acceptance," said White. "The fact that we were able to ship this unit in October - the same month as its introduction at AES - is a testament to the coordinated efforts of our Engineering, Production, Sales and Marketing teams. The transition between building and shipping the original ADAT and the new XT has been a very smooth process, and our top priority has been to meet as much of the customer demand as possible."
The ADAT-XT is a multitrack digital audio recorder that records eight tracks of 1 6-bit linear digital audio onto standard S-VHS cassettes. It utilizes 1 8-bit, 128 times oversampling A-D converters for professional audio fidelity, while the 20-bit 8 times oversampling D-A converters provide excellent phase response, flat frequency spectrum (20Hz to 20kHz +/- 0.5dB) and extremely low distortion, even at low amplitudes. ADAT-XT's software-controlled transport offers rewind, fast forward and locate speeds that are up to four times as fast as original ADAT. Plus, this "intelligent" transport recognizes if an over- or undershoot occurs and corrects for it in subsequent locates.
Several digital editing functions that were formerly only available with the Alesis BRC Master Remote Control, like Tape Offset, Track Copy and Track Delay,
have been incorporated into the ADAT-XT's design. ADAT-XT provides a 10-point autolocate system with built-in Auto Play, Auto Record, Auto Return and Rehearse functions. The autolocate buttons double as a 1 0-key pad for entering numerical data for offsets, locate points, track delay and other commands. The automated punch in/out and other locate points are accurate to 1/1 00th of a second. The ADAT-XT is completely compatible for use with the BRC, which offers greater accuracy (1/48,000th of a second) and bar/beat display references for offsets and locates as well as hundreds of locate points with user-definable names, advanced synchronization capabilities and transport control of up to 16 ADAT-XT's (128 tracks) from one location.
By using the proven S-VHS recording format and incorporating the ADAT MultiChannel Optical Digital Interface and the ADAT Synchronization Interface, the ADAT-XT is completely compatible with all existing ADAT-format recorders, including the original Alesis ADAT as well as ADAT-format recorders from Fostex and Panasonic. The XT can also be used with hundreds of ADAT-compatible products (synths, signal processors, interfaces and more) from manufacturers in the ADAT Group of 3rd party developers.
Introduced in 1991 as the world's first modular digital multitrack recorder under $4000, the award-winning Alesis ADAT has since become the most successful professional multitrack recorder with over 70,000 units sold worldwide. The ADAT format offers the ability to record eight tracks of 1 6-bit linear digital audio onto standard S-VHS cassettes with amazing clarity and audio fidelity, exceeding the sound quality of any analog multitrack recorder, while remaining affordable and easy to use. Specifically designed for professional audio recording, ADAT recorders employ a modular design that may be used as a stand-alone 8-track device, or linked together to form a digital recording system from 16 to 128 tracks. ADAT's inexpensive S-VHS tape offers recording times of over an hour, making it the perfect format to handle any application from demo tapes to film post production.
