Steinberg Launches Virtual Studio Technology(TM)

New TDM Plug-Ins from Steinberg Digital Audio

January 18, 1996

Introducing Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology(TM): High performance, highly professional and easy-to-use DSP programs for digital signal processing. Digidesign's TDM environment is a great platform for such tools and Steinberg offer a whole range of Plug-lns that interface with any TDM compatible software from Cubase Audio to ProTools!

'Virtual outboard gear' needs no rack space and is absolutely noise free: No hum, no crackles, no buzz! The complete signal path and connections all exist in the digital domain. And what's more, the complete studio is set up and running before your assistant finds a single patch chord. Whatever you need, drag a device into the signal path and it's done. With TDM and the Virtual Studio Technology(TM) you have endless possibilities.

With tools like tuners, reverb, hi-end audio enhancement and declicking Steinberg delivers the studio of the future, today! The Plug-lns are all up to the high Steinberg standards - top sound quality and easy to use. For many musicians it's a dream come true! Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology(TM) makes your studio life easier, improves the quality of your output and opens breathtaking new horizons.

Current Steinberg Plug-lns:

  • Steinberg DeClicker- The Real-Time DeClicker
  • Steinberg Spectralizer - The Sonic Optimizer
  • Steinberg TimeGuard - The TDM Timing Analyzer
  • Steinberg VFX - The Essential FX Collection
  • Steinberg Tun-A - The TDM Tuner Couple
  • Steinberg Red ValveIt! - The first virtual Tube-Amp (Further details expected in March)

Steinberg DeClicker

DeClicker is a high performance DSP Plug-In for real-time restoration of audio material. It is absolutely ideal for the removal of clicks from old vinyl records, so it's a 'must' for any re mastering suite, but it does a whole lot more. DeClicker removes digital clicks or static discharge cracks from your DAT masters, softens digital distortion and can even mask tape dropouts of up to 60 samples.

Features:

  • Extremely high quality of results
  • Completely real-time
  • Intuitive user interface
  • 24-bit processing
  • Includes mono and true stereo version
  • Interfaces with ProTools environment
  • Accessible from within TDM sequencer environments
Applications:
  • Removal of digital clicks
  • Restoring vinyl records by removing clicks
  • Masking tape drop-outs up to 60 samples long
  • Removal of static discharge cracks
  • Softening digital distortion

Steinberg Spectralizer

Spectralizer, the Sonic Optimizer is a truly innovative audio processing tool. A device that is not realizable with analog technology. Everyone is familiar with level-based optimization, but so far there have been no real tools for sonic optimization. Spectralizer does exactly that. It enables spectral enhancements of digital audio recordings, with a quality never been available before. But unlike ordinary enhancers, it does not spoil the material with artifacts or noise caused by the analog device itself, nor does it affect the phase. Spectralizer will make your recordings sound crisper, clearer and will give them more presence. You will be awed by the "warm" sounding results. The different modes allow you to adjust the "strength" of the effect, you can even emulate the sound of an analog enhancer whenever you want it.

Features:

  • Extremely high quality of results
  • Completely real-time
  • Intuitive user interface
  • 24-bit processing
  • Accurate adjustment of 2nd and 3rd harmonic
  • 'HOT' switch for extra-strong presence
  • 'Warm' sound
  • No noise added to processing results
  • No phase shifts
  • Includes mono and true stereo version
  • Interfaces with ProTools environment
  • Accessible from within TDM sequencer environments
Applications:
  • Increase the frequency spectrum of recordings
  • Improve the crispness & transparency of recordings
  • Increase the attention of listeners

Steinberg TimeGuard

TimeGuard - The TDM Timing Analyzer is a plug-in for measuring delays between two audio tracks. This timing accuracy meter makes it easy to detect rushing or dragging on recordings with an exactness of up to one sample!

The shifts can be displayed in either samples or milliseconds.

Since any plug-in in the TDM environment produces delays in the signal flow, TimeGuard is an indispensable tool for the mixing situation, where such delays could cause phase shifts: The delay parameter actually helps to correct any shifts between two analyzed tracks.

Features:

  • Extremely precise
  • Completely real-time
  • Intuitive user interface
  • 24-bit processing
  • Interfaces with ProTools environment
  • Accessible from within TDM sequencer environments
Applications:
  • Detects any timing shifts in the signal path
  • Fix shifts and prevent phase problems
  • Detect rushing or dragging in session situations
  • Detects shifts with an accuracy of up to one sample
  • Display of shifts in samples or milliseconds

Steinberg Virtual FX Rack

The Virtual Effects Rack (Vol. 1 ) is a set of five essential DSP effects programs for ProTools III, programmed so efficiently that you can use more than one at a time without wasting too much precious DSP power.
  • Pandora is a stereo auto-panner for all those wacky stereo effects. By switching between waveforms you can determine the color of the effect from smooth pan to 'jumping' from one extreme to another.
  • Halleluja Chorus supplies you with a completely new kind of chorusing: Introducing the 'glimmer' parameter for extra-rich chorus effects.
  • PlateRunner represents a classic reverb effect. Always available to add more ambiance to your recordings.
  • StereoWizard lets you expand the stereo 'image' whenever you'd like to intensify the stereo impression of a recording.
  • Y-cables for comprehensive mixing, merging and patching e.g. in Cubase Audio TDM. The Y-cables allow for merging two ins into one out or vice versa. And that's not all: the VFX-Rack has a very attractive price-tag!
Features:
  • Includes the 'essential FX'
  • Completely real-time
  • Intuitive user interface
  • Programmed very efficiently: up to 2 Plug-lns work on one DSP
  • Interfaces with ProTools environment
  • Accessible from within TDM sequencer environments

Steinberg Tun-A

Tun-A, the TDM tuner couple, is a set of Guitar and Chromatic Tuner Plug-lns. Perfect for tuning analog synths, guitars or any other instrument 'on-the-fly'. The Guitar Tuner is a very accurate tuning device, with all the features you'd expect and more. You can even call up a tuning preset called "open G" and tune your guitar accordingly. The Chromatic Tuner goes beyond that by offering chromatic tuning with additional tuning schemes from 'pure' to 'exotic'.

The implemented tone generator in both Plug-lns allows for generation of a tuning tone.

Features:

  • Extremely accurate
  • Completely real-time
  • Intuitive user interface
  • Supports a variety of tuning schemes
  • All tuning notes are user-definable
  • Dedicated guitar & chromatic tuner plug-in
  • Tone generator for tuning note
  • Interfaces with ProTools environment
  • Accessible from within TDM sequencer environments
Applications:
  • Tuning guitars, basses, ...
  • Tuning vintage synths
  • Tuning chromatic instruments such as pianos
  • Checking the pitch of recorded material
