Sabian Introduces Manhattan Ride

January 29, 1998

With the new 20" and 22" Hand Hammered Manhattan Ride SABAN has created a cymbal which delivers the raw, semi-dry and warm, full sounds so popular with the leading drummers of the 50's, 60's and early, 70's... sounds which many of the today's jazz, alternative, funk, rock, ska and fusion drummers consider to be the ultimate in traditional ride sounds.

Individually hand hammered for greater tonal complexity, the Manhattan Ride Is a thin, high profile model which readily responds to sticks and brushes in all dynamics and tempos of playing. True to tradition its responses are distinctly hot and breathy 'tah' sounds, bathed in a complementary wash of vibrantly shimmering traditional Turkish tone. Riding across the edge of the cymbal produces a full, fat wall of sound, while accenting across the outer bow or edge creates a fast, raw and biting burst of energy, for quick punches in even the fastest rhythm stickngs. The bell barks with a moderate degree of bite, defining its presence without overpowering the character of the cymbal. It's this fundamental musical rawness and finely balanced blending of consistent stroke definition with tonal color that makes the Manhattan Ride so uniquely true to is musical roots.Commented Nort Hargrove, SABIAN Asst. VP Manufacturing: "Those great sounding cymbals of the past were our inspiration for the Manhattan Ride. They were thin cymbals that vibrated with great intensity, throwing tone out into the air... they literally shimmered and shook, creating a dense bed of sound over which stick strokes could clearly bounce and swing. Until now no-one else could even consider reproducing these prized cymbals because SABIAN is the only major firm with the hand hammering skills, the correct bronze recipe, and the historical perspective to create them.
